Gate 42 in Human Design

You sense when something wants to come to its end. A path you have begun keeps you in suspense until it has found a fitting close. Your need is to complete cycles so that something new can begin on firm ground.

Gate 42 is connected with the theme of finishing deliberately in Human Design.

When too many things stay half open, you feel scattered and heavy. Once a chapter finds its conclusion, room opens up in you and you look ahead with confidence.

The six lines

Line 1

If your conscious Sun is in Gate 42.1:

Your conscious Sun sits in Gate 42, the Gate of Completion. It shows itself to you when a thing has come to its end and when it still carries. Finishing what you started gives your year its shape. You want to know your sense of completion from the ground up before you lean on it. A second-hand account rarely satisfies you, you go back yourself to the layer everything else rests on. Until that layer is clear, whatever stands on top of it feels borrowed to you. This is not caution, it is how you come to trust anything at all. It gets difficult when you stay inside a circle long since closed or when you break off because the ending unsettles you. A date set in advance takes the weight out of the question. Security comes to you from what you have understood, not from what you have been promised. What you once worked through to the bottom still holds when things around you get unsettled. That is where your calm comes from. When you bring a circle to its end, the next beginning stands on something finished. Your impulse for daily life: Today you pick one place where your sense of completion still rests on an assumption and follow it one layer deeper. Working slowly is no delay for you, it is how ground appears under your feet. In the evening you note in one sentence what you now actually understand. The rest can wait for another day.

Line 2

If your conscious Sun is in Gate 42.2:

Your conscious Sun sits in Gate 42, the Gate of Completion. It shows itself to you when a thing has come to its end and when it still carries. Finishing what you started gives your year its shape. Your sense of completion comes to you without a run-up and without intention. You often notice only from the reactions of other people that something was unusual which felt entirely ordinary to you. Because it costs you so little, you tend to undervalue it. What comes easily is still worth something. In your case it is worth a great deal. It gets difficult when you stay inside a circle long since closed or when you break off because the ending unsettles you. A date set in advance takes the weight out of the question. In between you need time in which nobody wants anything from you. What others read into you rarely matches what you find in yourself. The gap between the two is where most of your tiredness comes from. When you bring a circle to its end, the next beginning stands on something finished. Your impulse for daily life: Today you watch for when a call from outside actually means your sense of completion and when it only carries what someone else expects of you. You let the first call wait an hour before you answer. A no to the wrong request keeps your energy free for the right one. Nobody is owed your immediate yes.

Line 3

If your conscious Sun is in Gate 42.3:

Your conscious Sun sits in Gate 42, the Gate of Completion. It shows itself to you when a thing has come to its end and when it still carries. Finishing what you started gives your year its shape. You find out nothing about your sense of completion without having tried it. What convinces you on paper you would rather test early against the resistance of reality than late. Other people sometimes see disorder in this. What looks like detour from outside is the only road on which your kind of knowledge is made. It gets difficult when you stay inside a circle long since closed or when you break off because the ending unsettles you. A date set in advance takes the weight out of the question. Your path rarely runs straight. An attempt that does not work takes nothing from you, it cuts off a possibility you would otherwise have carried around for years. Every closed door narrows the field in a useful way. When you bring a circle to its end, the next beginning stands on something finished. Your impulse for daily life: Today you run one small experiment with your sense of completion whose outcome you do not know. Afterwards you look less at the result than at what you now know and did not know before. A small failure costs little. An untested assumption can cost you years.

Line 4

If your conscious Sun is in Gate 42.4:

Your conscious Sun sits in Gate 42, the Gate of Completion. It shows itself to you when a thing has come to its end and when it still carries. Finishing what you started gives your year its shape. Your sense of completion works through the people who already know you. With strangers you need a run-up, inside a trusted circle the essential part almost falls into place by itself. A room full of unknown faces costs you more than an hour with three people who have known you for years. That is not shyness, it is where your ground lies. It gets difficult when you stay inside a circle long since closed or when you break off because the ending unsettles you. A date set in advance takes the weight out of the question. A circle that carries you grows out of reliability rather than numbers. You give first and receive later, often from a side you had not counted on. Keeping the circle in good repair is itself part of your work. When you bring a circle to its end, the next beginning stands on something finished. Your impulse for daily life: Today you turn to one person in your circle and tell them what you are working on. You ask for no favour, you simply share your sense of completion with someone you trust. An opening comes more often from that telling than from any effort made alone. Let the conversation be the point.

Line 5

If your conscious Sun is in Gate 42.5:

Your conscious Sun sits in Gate 42, the Gate of Completion. It shows itself to you when a thing has come to its end and when it still carries. Finishing what you started gives your year its shape. People expect a solution from you as soon as your sense of completion becomes visible. Part of that expectation fits you exactly, another part belongs to a picture someone has put up in front of you. Telling the two apart is the work of your life. Nobody else can do it for you, because from outside the two look identical. It gets difficult when you stay inside a circle long since closed or when you break off because the ending unsettles you. A date set in advance takes the weight out of the question. Between rescuer and disappointment there is only one step for you. The difference is decided beforehand, in the moment you agree or let it pass. Saying less than you could is often the safer trade. When you bring a circle to its end, the next beginning stands on something finished. Your impulse for daily life: Today you check one request to see whether it really means your sense of completion or a picture somebody holds of you. You agree where you can deliver and you say openly where the expectation reaches beyond you. A clearly drawn line protects your standing better than any promise. Vagueness is what costs you later.

Line 6

If your conscious Sun is in Gate 42.6:

Your conscious Sun sits in Gate 42, the Gate of Completion. It shows itself to you when a thing has come to its end and when it still carries. Finishing what you started gives your year its shape. Your sense of completion changes shape in you over the years. First comes a long stretch of experience, then a distance in which things sort themselves and finally a calm that others come to you for. Each stretch has its own kind of work. Treating one of them as though it were another is where most of the strain comes from. It gets difficult when you stay inside a circle long since closed or when you break off because the ending unsettles you. A date set in advance takes the weight out of the question. What you live counts for more with you than what you say. Your standing grows not from intent but from the fact that you walked through what you speak about. People sense the difference without being able to name it. When you bring a circle to its end, the next beginning stands on something finished. Your impulse for daily life: Today you ask which stretch you are standing in and treat it accordingly. In the middle of experience you gather without drawing conclusions yet. At a distance you sort things out and where you have long since come through, you pass your sense of completion on quietly. No stretch is wasted time.

Incarnation crosses with Gate 42 as Sun gate

Right Angle Cross of Maya

In first place stands the art of bringing something to an end. Behind it a sense for what lasts and what outlives itself. Underneath an inkling of what cannot be known and a pleasure in exact figures. What comes of it is a life in cycles, in which every thing gets its time and is then closed.

When you have begun something, you see it through even when the middle turns dull. When you notice that something is over, you need nobody to confirm it. And when somebody pushes you to start the next thing at once, you go stubborn.

The right angle means this rhythm comes out of you. Others notice the ending later than you do. If none of this fits, it is the picture that is off and not you.

Juxtaposition Cross of Completion

A closing that cannot be negotiated. Add an eye for what lasts, an acceptance of the limit and a weaving of what you lived into stories. Out of that comes a tone that hears every thing through to the end. Half finished things sit heavier in your stomach than heavy ones. What you begin you want to be able to finish, otherwise you would rather not start.

When you have started a book, you finish it even when it annoys you. When a conversation ends in the middle of a sentence, you think about it for days. And when ten things are open, you cannot start a new one.

Juxtaposition means this pull is fixed. It is not a love of order, it is build. If you do not recognise yourself here, that says something about the picture and nothing about you.

Left Angle Cross of Limitation

A closing with dignity, an eye for what lasts, an acceptance of what will not work and the weaving into stories. Alone that would be a tidy life. Among people it becomes an ending: you are the person at whom a thing stops, because you say out loud that it is over.

When a group drags a thing along for another half year, you are the first to say that it is enough. When you say it, some are relieved and others are angry. And when you keep quiet, the group waits and looks at you.

The left angle means this theme comes about at other people. Alone there would only be your own endings. If none of this fits, it is the picture that is off and not you.

And what does this mean for you?
