Gate 16 in Human Design

When you learn something, the joy of mastery draws you in, long before the result. You experience how repetition builds certainty in you and how curiosity turns into skill. The need behind it is to see your own ability grow.

Gate 16 is connected with the theme of practising skills in Human Design.

When you lack room to practise for a while, the enthusiasm grows quieter. Once you find it again, the pleasure of trying things out awakens and what you have learned feels like a part of you.

The six lines

Line 1

If your conscious Sun is in Gate 16.1:

Your conscious Sun sits in Gate 16, the Gate of Enthusiasm. Something grips you and you practise it until it holds, with nobody having to push you. Other things leave you completely cold. You want to know your enthusiasm from the ground up before you lean on it. A second-hand account rarely satisfies you, you go back yourself to the layer everything else rests on. Until that layer is clear, whatever stands on top of it feels borrowed to you. This is not caution, it is how you come to trust anything at all. It becomes too much when you say yes to too much at once or stop practising because it is not good enough yet. A fixed appointment helps more than a verdict. Security comes to you from what you have understood, not from what you have been promised. What you once worked through to the bottom still holds when things around you get unsettled. That is where your calm comes from. When your enthusiasm follows a genuine stirring, your skill deepens without being forced. Your impulse for daily life: Today you pick one place where your enthusiasm still rests on an assumption and follow it one layer deeper. Working slowly is no delay for you, it is how ground appears under your feet. In the evening you note in one sentence what you now actually understand. The rest can wait for another day.

Line 2

If your conscious Sun is in Gate 16.2:

Your conscious Sun sits in Gate 16, the Gate of Enthusiasm. Something grips you and you practise it until it holds, with nobody having to push you. Other things leave you completely cold. Your enthusiasm comes to you without a run-up and without intention. You often notice only from the reactions of other people that something was unusual which felt entirely ordinary to you. Because it costs you so little, you tend to undervalue it. What comes easily is still worth something. In your case it is worth a great deal. It becomes too much when you say yes to too much at once or stop practising because it is not good enough yet. A fixed appointment helps more than a verdict. In between you need time in which nobody wants anything from you. What others read into you rarely matches what you find in yourself. The gap between the two is where most of your tiredness comes from. When your enthusiasm follows a genuine stirring, your skill deepens without being forced. Your impulse for daily life: Today you watch for when a call from outside actually means your enthusiasm and when it only carries what someone else expects of you. You let the first call wait an hour before you answer. A no to the wrong request keeps your energy free for the right one. Nobody is owed your immediate yes.

Line 3

If your conscious Sun is in Gate 16.3:

Your conscious Sun sits in Gate 16, the Gate of Enthusiasm. Something grips you and you practise it until it holds, with nobody having to push you. Other things leave you completely cold. You find out nothing about your enthusiasm without having tried it. What convinces you on paper you would rather test early against the resistance of reality than late. Other people sometimes see disorder in this. What looks like detour from outside is the only road on which your kind of knowledge is made. It becomes too much when you say yes to too much at once or stop practising because it is not good enough yet. A fixed appointment helps more than a verdict. Your path rarely runs straight. An attempt that does not work takes nothing from you, it cuts off a possibility you would otherwise have carried around for years. Every closed door narrows the field in a useful way. When your enthusiasm follows a genuine stirring, your skill deepens without being forced. Your impulse for daily life: Today you run one small experiment with your enthusiasm whose outcome you do not know. Afterwards you look less at the result than at what you now know and did not know before. A small failure costs little. An untested assumption can cost you years.

Line 4

If your conscious Sun is in Gate 16.4:

Your conscious Sun sits in Gate 16, the Gate of Enthusiasm. Something grips you and you practise it until it holds, with nobody having to push you. Other things leave you completely cold. Your enthusiasm works through the people who already know you. With strangers you need a run-up, inside a trusted circle the essential part almost falls into place by itself. A room full of unknown faces costs you more than an hour with three people who have known you for years. That is not shyness, it is where your ground lies. It becomes too much when you say yes to too much at once or stop practising because it is not good enough yet. A fixed appointment helps more than a verdict. A circle that carries you grows out of reliability rather than numbers. You give first and receive later, often from a side you had not counted on. Keeping the circle in good repair is itself part of your work. When your enthusiasm follows a genuine stirring, your skill deepens without being forced. Your impulse for daily life: Today you turn to one person in your circle and tell them what you are working on. You ask for no favour, you simply share your enthusiasm with someone you trust. An opening comes more often from that telling than from any effort made alone. Let the conversation be the point.

Line 5

If your conscious Sun is in Gate 16.5:

Your conscious Sun sits in Gate 16, the Gate of Enthusiasm. Something grips you and you practise it until it holds, with nobody having to push you. Other things leave you completely cold. People expect a solution from you as soon as your enthusiasm becomes visible. Part of that expectation fits you exactly, another part belongs to a picture someone has put up in front of you. Telling the two apart is the work of your life. Nobody else can do it for you, because from outside the two look identical. It becomes too much when you say yes to too much at once or stop practising because it is not good enough yet. A fixed appointment helps more than a verdict. Between rescuer and disappointment there is only one step for you. The difference is decided beforehand, in the moment you agree or let it pass. Saying less than you could is often the safer trade. When your enthusiasm follows a genuine stirring, your skill deepens without being forced. Your impulse for daily life: Today you check one request to see whether it really means your enthusiasm or a picture somebody holds of you. You agree where you can deliver and you say openly where the expectation reaches beyond you. A clearly drawn line protects your standing better than any promise. Vagueness is what costs you later.

Line 6

If your conscious Sun is in Gate 16.6:

Your conscious Sun sits in Gate 16, the Gate of Enthusiasm. Something grips you and you practise it until it holds, with nobody having to push you. Other things leave you completely cold. Your enthusiasm changes shape in you over the years. First comes a long stretch of experience, then a distance in which things sort themselves and finally a calm that others come to you for. Each stretch has its own kind of work. Treating one of them as though it were another is where most of the strain comes from. It becomes too much when you say yes to too much at once or stop practising because it is not good enough yet. A fixed appointment helps more than a verdict. What you live counts for more with you than what you say. Your standing grows not from intent but from the fact that you walked through what you speak about. People sense the difference without being able to name it. When your enthusiasm follows a genuine stirring, your skill deepens without being forced. Your impulse for daily life: Today you ask which stretch you are standing in and treat it accordingly. In the middle of experience you gather without drawing conclusions yet. At a distance you sort things out and where you have long since come through, you pass your enthusiasm on quietly. No stretch is wasted time.

Incarnation crosses with Gate 16 as Sun gate

Right Angle Cross of Planning

Out in front burns the appetite for trying something before you can do it. The beginning draws you more than the result. Behind it lies a pull towards detail, a feel for bonds and a need to be alone once the work is delivered. Together they make a run up that takes others with it.

When you start something new, you infect others without meaning to. When you are supposed to keep going after the first enthusiasm, it turns heavy. And when somebody stays with you then, you hold out considerably longer. On your own you break off sooner.

The right angle means this run up comes from you. Others jump on, the spark was yours. If none of this fits, it is the picture that is off and not you.

Juxtaposition Cross of Experimentation

The appetite for trying stands at the front, behind it a pull towards detail. Add a testing doubt and a head that is used to fog. Out of it comes an experimenting that starts over again and again, even when nothing is urging it. The appeal is in the trying and not in the finishing.

When something attracts you, you begin without knowing the outcome. When somebody asks you about the goal, you do not have one. And when you force yourself to plan first, you lose the appetite before the first step. The path forms while you walk it.

Juxtaposition means this experimenting is fixed. It does not stop when quiet would be called for. If you do not recognise yourself here, that says something about the picture and nothing about you.

Left Angle Cross of Identification

Pleasure in trying, an eye for detail, an alert doubt and a head that can bear open ends. On your own it stays a game. As soon as someone else is there, the game turns into going along, often further than planned. The push comes from outside, the staying power from you.

When you meet somebody who burns for their cause, you are in the middle of it within days. When their excitement tips, yours tips with it. And when you ask yourself whether it is your cause, the answer only comes with distance. Only then does your own fire separate from theirs.

The left angle means this theme comes about at other people. Without the fire of someone else there is nothing here to light. If none of this fits, it is the picture that is off and not you.

And what does this mean for you?
