Finding Your Birth Time in Switzerland: A Practical Guide

The good news: in Switzerland, your time of birth is officially recorded.

If you want to calculate Human Design, your ascendant or your birth chart precisely, you need the time of birth. Unlike in some countries, in Switzerland it is kept in the civil status register. This guide shows step by step how to obtain your birth time.

Where is my birth time registered in Switzerland?

The responsible authority is the Zivilstandsamt (civil registry office). Every birth in Switzerland is certified by the civil registry office of the place of birth and recorded in the central civil status register, including the date and time of birth.

Important: what counts is the place of birth, not where you live today. If you were born in Zurich and live in Bern today, you contact the civil registry office in Zurich. For births abroad, the Swiss representation or the registry office at the former place of birth can help.

How do I request my birth time from the civil registry office?

The usual route:

1. Find the civil registry office of your place of birth (the municipality's website names the responsible office, many offices are merged regionally).

2. Order an extract from the birth register, by phone, e-mail, the office's online form or in person. Mention explicitly that you need the time of birth.

3. Prove your identity: a copy of your passport or identity card is part of the order.

You are entitled to information about your own person; for relatives, additional requirements may apply depending on the case.

What does it cost and how long does it take?

Extracts from the civil status register usually cost around 30 Swiss francs; the fees are regulated uniformly across Switzerland, with small differences possible for postage or additional services. Processing usually takes a few days to about two weeks depending on the office.

When in doubt, briefly ask before ordering whether the time of birth appears on the requested document, that saves you a second order.

What are the alternatives?

Before you order, it is worth checking within the family:

Ask parents and relatives. Often someone remembers surprisingly precisely, at least morning, midday or night.

Search baby memorabilia. Birth announcements, baby albums, congratulation cards or the maternity clinic's keepsake booklet often state the exact time.

Ask the birth clinic. Hospitals keep patient files only for a limited period, usually a few decades; for younger birth years it can be worth a try.

The official extract remains the most reliable source, as memories tend to round to the half or full hour.

What if the birth time cannot be found anywhere?

Even without a time, far from everything is lost. Numerology and the sun sign work entirely without a time, and the moon sign does too on most days. For Human Design and the ascendant, you calculate with the 12:00 approximation and read the results as a well-founded sketch.

What stays stable and what can flip is explained in the guide Human Design without a birth time. Start directly with the free Soul Blueprint, where you can explicitly mark the unknown time as unknown.
