Gate 49 in Human Design

You sense very precisely which relationships and circumstances match your values. When a foundation no longer holds, the wish for change stirs in you. Behind it stands the need for closeness to rest on shared principles.

Gate 49 is connected with the theme of values and boundaries in Human Design.

When you sense a rift and pass over it, a silent distance grows in you. Once you address it, a relationship can renew itself and become fairer for both.

The six lines

Line 1

If your conscious Sun is in Gate 49.1:

Your conscious Sun sits in Gate 49, the Gate of Principles. You notice when an agreement has lost its validity. You are then ready to end it rather than patch it up. A half-repaired arrangement rarely holds you. You want to know your principle from the ground up before you lean on it. A second-hand account rarely satisfies you, you go back yourself to the layer everything else rests on. Until that layer is clear, whatever stands on top of it feels borrowed to you. This is not caution, it is how you come to trust anything at all. It tips when you break things off out of an emotional wave or reject everything that does not meet your measure. A night between the decision and the word changes the outcome. Security comes to you from what you have understood, not from what you have been promised. What you once worked through to the bottom still holds when things around you get unsettled. That is where your calm comes from. When you end something only after the wave has settled, your refusal holds without wounding. Your impulse for daily life: Today you pick one place where your principle still rests on an assumption and follow it one layer deeper. Working slowly is no delay for you, it is how ground appears under your feet. In the evening you note in one sentence what you now actually understand. The rest can wait for another day.

Line 2

If your conscious Sun is in Gate 49.2:

Your conscious Sun sits in Gate 49, the Gate of Principles. You notice when an agreement has lost its validity. You are then ready to end it rather than patch it up. A half-repaired arrangement rarely holds you. Your principle comes to you without a run-up and without intention. You often notice only from the reactions of other people that something was unusual which felt entirely ordinary to you. Because it costs you so little, you tend to undervalue it. What comes easily is still worth something. In your case it is worth a great deal. It tips when you break things off out of an emotional wave or reject everything that does not meet your measure. A night between the decision and the word changes the outcome. In between you need time in which nobody wants anything from you. What others read into you rarely matches what you find in yourself. The gap between the two is where most of your tiredness comes from. When you end something only after the wave has settled, your refusal holds without wounding. Your impulse for daily life: Today you watch for when a call from outside actually means your principle and when it only carries what someone else expects of you. You let the first call wait an hour before you answer. A no to the wrong request keeps your energy free for the right one. Nobody is owed your immediate yes.

Line 3

If your conscious Sun is in Gate 49.3:

Your conscious Sun sits in Gate 49, the Gate of Principles. You notice when an agreement has lost its validity. You are then ready to end it rather than patch it up. A half-repaired arrangement rarely holds you. You find out nothing about your principle without having tried it. What convinces you on paper you would rather test early against the resistance of reality than late. Other people sometimes see disorder in this. What looks like detour from outside is the only road on which your kind of knowledge is made. It tips when you break things off out of an emotional wave or reject everything that does not meet your measure. A night between the decision and the word changes the outcome. Your path rarely runs straight. An attempt that does not work takes nothing from you, it cuts off a possibility you would otherwise have carried around for years. Every closed door narrows the field in a useful way. When you end something only after the wave has settled, your refusal holds without wounding. Your impulse for daily life: Today you run one small experiment with your principle whose outcome you do not know. Afterwards you look less at the result than at what you now know and did not know before. A small failure costs little. An untested assumption can cost you years.

Line 4

If your conscious Sun is in Gate 49.4:

Your conscious Sun sits in Gate 49, the Gate of Principles. You notice when an agreement has lost its validity. You are then ready to end it rather than patch it up. A half-repaired arrangement rarely holds you. Your principle works through the people who already know you. With strangers you need a run-up, inside a trusted circle the essential part almost falls into place by itself. A room full of unknown faces costs you more than an hour with three people who have known you for years. That is not shyness, it is where your ground lies. It tips when you break things off out of an emotional wave or reject everything that does not meet your measure. A night between the decision and the word changes the outcome. A circle that carries you grows out of reliability rather than numbers. You give first and receive later, often from a side you had not counted on. Keeping the circle in good repair is itself part of your work. When you end something only after the wave has settled, your refusal holds without wounding. Your impulse for daily life: Today you turn to one person in your circle and tell them what you are working on. You ask for no favour, you simply share your principle with someone you trust. An opening comes more often from that telling than from any effort made alone. Let the conversation be the point.

Line 5

If your conscious Sun is in Gate 49.5:

Your conscious Sun sits in Gate 49, the Gate of Principles. You notice when an agreement has lost its validity. You are then ready to end it rather than patch it up. A half-repaired arrangement rarely holds you. People expect a solution from you as soon as your principle becomes visible. Part of that expectation fits you exactly, another part belongs to a picture someone has put up in front of you. Telling the two apart is the work of your life. Nobody else can do it for you, because from outside the two look identical. It tips when you break things off out of an emotional wave or reject everything that does not meet your measure. A night between the decision and the word changes the outcome. Between rescuer and disappointment there is only one step for you. The difference is decided beforehand, in the moment you agree or let it pass. Saying less than you could is often the safer trade. When you end something only after the wave has settled, your refusal holds without wounding. Your impulse for daily life: Today you check one request to see whether it really means your principle or a picture somebody holds of you. You agree where you can deliver and you say openly where the expectation reaches beyond you. A clearly drawn line protects your standing better than any promise. Vagueness is what costs you later.

Line 6

If your conscious Sun is in Gate 49.6:

Your conscious Sun sits in Gate 49, the Gate of Principles. You notice when an agreement has lost its validity. You are then ready to end it rather than patch it up. A half-repaired arrangement rarely holds you. Your principle changes shape in you over the years. First comes a long stretch of experience, then a distance in which things sort themselves and finally a calm that others come to you for. Each stretch has its own kind of work. Treating one of them as though it were another is where most of the strain comes from. It tips when you break things off out of an emotional wave or reject everything that does not meet your measure. A night between the decision and the word changes the outcome. What you live counts for more with you than what you say. Your standing grows not from intent but from the fact that you walked through what you speak about. People sense the difference without being able to name it. When you end something only after the wave has settled, your refusal holds without wounding. Your impulse for daily life: Today you ask which stretch you are standing in and treat it accordingly. In the middle of experience you gather without drawing conclusions yet. At a distance you sort things out and where you have long since come through, you pass your principle on quietly. No stretch is wasted time.

Right Angle Cross of Explanation

Right at the front stands a principle you do not shake. It is not loud, it is simply there and decides more than you are aware of. Behind it a mind that drafts answers, along with an insight that arrives without a run up and the ability to make strange things understandable. What comes of it is someone who explains at length and then suddenly stops negotiating.

When you go through a matter with somebody, you have patience for three rounds. When your principle gets touched along the way, the conversation is over before you notice it yourself. And when you stay somewhere where that principle is broken daily, you go quiet and leave at some point without announcing it.

The right angle means this unfolds out of your own path. Others notice the border, they did not draw it. If you do not recognise yourself here, that says something about the picture and nothing about you.

Juxtaposition Cross of Principles

A principle that is not up for negotiation. Add a mind full of drafts, a force that flows to wherever the joy is and the urge to make something good visible. Together that makes a firm line in how you deal with people. You can put up with a great deal but not with everything and the dividing line sits deeper than it looks from outside.

When you have known somebody a long time, you forgive a great deal. When that same person crosses your line, it is over and you do not explain at length. And when somebody takes you for hard because of it, there is little you can say.

Juxtaposition means this line is fixed. It is not severity, it is build. If none of this fits, it is the picture that is off and not you.

Left Angle Cross of Revolution

A firm principle, a mind full of drafts, a force that follows joy and a contribution that makes something visible. Alone that would be a quiet conviction. Among people it becomes an overturning on a small scale: you get a group to change a rule everybody had taken as given.

When you come into an order nobody can justify any more, you ask for the reason. When nobody names one, you have already half opened the matter. And when something really does change, everybody says afterwards that it was overdue anyway.

The left angle means this theme comes about at other people. Alone you would only have your own order. If you do not recognise yourself here, that says something about the picture and nothing about you.

And what does this mean for you?
